Vendar imajo posledice – strahove.

Overcrowded dog shelters, lack of food and space have been a pressing issue for quite some time now. In Slovenia alone, thousands of dogs are admitted to animal shelters each year, and the situation south of the Slovenian border is even worse due to a large number of stray dogs. Although castration and sterilization are a cheap and easy method of reducing the number of unwanted puppies, people still rather leave the little ones on the streets, starve them out or shoot them. Some pups manage to get saved and come to a loving home. But they do not escape the consequences – the fears – and their owners work hard to overcome it. The series of photographs comprises portraits of dogs that have achieved that and their stories.

Anja in Tara

Maja in Drina
Drina is a rescue dog from an animal shelter in Bosnia, where she came from the streets. Since the shelter was overcrowded, she and her brother had to fight for food day after day. She was then taken to Slovenia to new owners, while her brother stayed in the shelter fighting for food and existence for another year, until a Slovenian family took him in.

Ada in Gemma
Oskrbovalci parka so to opazili in jo odpeljali daleč stran.

Lara in Looney
Looney’s first owners beat her, broke her tail, cut her and gave her a collar that was too small which painfully grew into her skin. Now, she is a fighter fighting for the food she did not have before. Lara is still battling Looney’s fears and is socializing her.

Takrat je Alja slišala njeno zgodbo in se odpravila ponjo. Alja zgodbi dodaja moto: “Sometimes you’ve got to go through Hell to get to Heaven.”
Misty has a damaged eye – someone stabbed her in the eye with a sharp object and the Roma refused to hand her over to volunteers who were willing to help her. The volunteers then waited in Banja Luka until the injured dog stepped on the street where they then grabbed her and took her to a veterinarian. That is when Alja heard Misty’s story and went to get her. Alja complements the story with the motto: “Sometimes you’ve got to go through hell to get to heaven.”

Maša in Bongo
Dokler ga v nov dom ni odpeljala Maša.
Bongo started his life at a farm where he and his brother were not wanted so no one took care of them or paid any attention to them. They were left to live outside, without any shelter. Since Maša and her boyfriend have been taking care of him, they have devoted a lot of time to boosting Bongo’s confidence, because he is still very shy and afraid that he will be abandoned.
